A Forecasting Platform User Made $436K from Bets on Maduro's Downfall.
A trader earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Venezuela's president just before it was made public, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the event.
Market Movement in Wagers
Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the hours before President Donald Trump stated on the weekend that Maduro had been apprehended.
One account, which joined the platform last month and took four positions, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a starting bet of $32,537.
The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Market Signals Before Announcement
Platform data shows that participants put the odds of a political change at just under 7% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.
However the odds had climbed to 11% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the morning of January 3rd, pointing to a sudden change in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a transaction based on non-public details," stated Dennis Kelleher.
A small number of other individuals also earned significant sums from predicting the capture.
Political Attention Intensifies
Politicians are starting to take note.
A bill introduced on recently seeks to ban federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
