The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Leadership Transition Follows Mixed Reception

Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the departure of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster early showing last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified employees about this organizational change through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the necessity for a more defined vision.

Ismailer expressed that the team is now reimagining the project with a renewed approach, aiming to satisfy community desires.

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

The news mirrors a similar action taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock development group.

With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was informative. It validated the promise of a action-packed game but told us we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the requirement for a more distinct brand.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the input to consideration and overhauled Project ETHOS with a renewed goal - one that’s poised to deliver on its potential to our fans.

The belief in this project strengthens every day. To further the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce the new hire as the latest Lead of 31st Union. Following some time of talks, Ben officially joins us on next week.

Ben’s leadership and experience in the competitive gaming genre is considerable, having devoted the past decade and a half producing and managing some of the most well-known titles in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

The appointee currently serves in the role of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, before that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.

The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 together with a community playtest. At the time, the developers portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting advancement on the category."

The game has not yet received an official launch window or supported systems, but players can anticipate further news as production continues.
